The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) is a vital economic indicator published monthly by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). It measures the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a representative "market basket" of goods and services. This market basket encompasses categories such as food, housing, apparel, transportation, medical care, recreation, education, and communication. The CPI-U reflects the spending habits of urban consumers, covering approximately 93% of the U.S. population, including professionals, self-employed individuals, the unemployed, and retirees living in urban areas. However, it excludes rural populations, farm households, military personnel, and institutionalized individuals.
