This dataset provides annual age-adjusted death rates (per 100,000 population) for the ten leading causes of death in the United States beginning in 1999. Data are derived from all resident death certificates filed in the 50 states and the District of Columbia, with information on demographic and medical characteristics.
Rates are adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population to allow comparability across time. Population estimates used in the rate calculations vary by period: intercensal revisions for years before 2010, enumerated populations for census years, and postcensal estimates based on the 2010 census for subsequent years.
Causes of death are classified according to the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICDβ10) and ranked by the number of deaths assigned to rankable causes. Statistics reflect the underlying cause of death
