This file reports COVID-19 death counts, crude and age-adjusted rates, and percent of total deaths by jurisdiction of residence. Data are provided at multiple time intervals (weekly, rolling 3-month, and cumulative since January 1, 2020). U.S. totals include all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and New York City, with Puerto Rico included in HHS Region 2.
Deaths are classified using ICD-10 code U07.1 for confirmed or presumed COVID-19. Counts reflect cases coded and processed by NCHS as of the analysis date, and may not represent all deaths that occurred during the reported periods due to reporting lags (1–8 weeks or longer).
Estimates should not be directly compared across states because reporting timeliness varies by jurisdiction. Sub-national counts <10 are suppressed to preserve confidentiality, and age-adjusted rates based on <20 deaths are suppressed for reliability. Rates are calculated with 2021 Census population estimates (Blended Base) and standardized to the 2000 U.S. population.
