The Chained Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (C-CPI-U) is an economic measure introduced by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in 2002. It aims to provide a more accurate reflection of the cost of living by accounting for changes in consumer spending habits in response to fluctuating prices. Unlike the traditional Consumer Price Index (CPI), which uses a fixed basket of goods and services, the C-CPI-U adjusts the basket to mirror substitutions consumers make when relative prices change. For example, if the price of beef rises, consumers might buy more chicken instead; the C-CPI-U captures this shift.
