The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) is a monthly economic indicator published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). It measures the average change over time in the prices paid by urban wage earners and clerical workers for a specific set of consumer goods and services. This demographic includes households where more than half of the income comes from clerical or wage occupations, and at least one of the earners has been employed for 37 weeks or more in the past year. The CPI-W is particularly significant as it serves as the basis for cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for Social Security benefits and other federal payments. For instance, in 2025, Social Security payments are set to increase by 2.5%, reflecting changes captured by the CPI-W.
